Battery longevity

I’m wondering if keeping my Lynx on and plugged in 24/7 would be bad for battery life. Does it have battery bypass that would make this okay or are there tips for preserving battery life?

E.g. how does this compare to letting the battery run down and then recharging? Is it better to turn it off nights and weekends when I’m not actively using it?

Is there much difference between using the charging cable and wireless charger? I imagine since the wireless charger can be automated via code that you could have it keep the battery at 100%, keep it at 80%, go down to 20% then charge to 80%, or basically any permutation you’d desire if it was known that one of these strategies was best for battery health and preferable to just keeping the cable plugged in

Lynx uses a typical Li-ion (18650-based) battery. We do not support a battery bypass on the charger, so when the robot is plugged in, the battery always remains part of the circuit.

For best battery longevity:

  • Avoid keeping the robot plugged in when it is fully charged and avoid discharging the battery to very low levels.
  • Prolonged periods at 100% charge are not recommended.
  • Shallow charge cycles are preferred, for example operating between 20% and 85% state of charge.
  • When leaving the robot unattended for short periods (such as overnight), keep the robot disconnected from the charger.
  • When the robot is active but not driving, the wired charger can be connected to avoid unnecessary discharging the battery. When you turn off the robot, which is almost fully charged, disconnecting the charger is recommended.

Electrically, there is little difference between the wireless and wired charger. As you said, the wireless charger can be automated, allowing proposed charge cycles to run without manual action as plugging and unplugging the charging cable. Using the WCH01/WCH02 wireless charger (WiBotic), you could keep the charging voltage in the range of 36 V … 39 V (50…80%) when you work on the stationary robot.
