The problem is probably directly related to attempts to build the firmware on Windows. Just to be sure, @MichaelT are you doing the above on Windows too?
In such a scenario, one solution might be to perform these steps on a Linux VM. Anyway, I will try to work with Windows, and maybe I can find another solution.

The only solution I can suggest without changing the operating system is to launch the Virtual Machine on Ubuntu 20.04 together with the platformio extension version 6.1.6. Then the building will be completed successfully.

that’s what I did originally:
I have a VM with Ubuntu 22.04 running and installed VSC and PlatformIO extension as mentiones in the ReadMe https://github.com/husarion/rosbot_ros2_firmware. This worked only once, than I got the error described in the other post https://community-mirror.husarion.com/t/error-when-building-rosbot-ros2-firmware/1601/7. Because that was not working I tried to do the firmware compile and upload in Windows and not in the VM with Ubuntu.
